David s right. Do not blame "stand by" state for electricity drain. Look around and turn off (or stand by) all appliances and lights that are not in use. If you are in your living room, there is no need to have lights in your kitchen, bathroom or master bedroom. If you are watching a TV in your living room, turn off your computer.
At last, please don't erase comments "against" your article (like my previous comment). This is rude.

While some equipment around the house can chew power while on standby (for example, our TV uses 15W on standby), phone chargers and the like generally aren't a useful target. Every small charger that I tested used far less than 1 Watt. My measurements suggested you could save more electricity by boiling one less cup of tea/coffee per week than by unplugging one phone charger.

Of course, you shouldn't take my word for it, you can always go and buy a plug ammeter and measure for yourself. You could also look at

http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/sustainable/charger/

which is a page maintained by David McKay, professor of physics at Cambridge. (He has also written a book on sustainable energy that you can download for free.)

I did this for a while before my husband pointed out that because i didn't unplug the computers power cord from the power strip, it was still draining power from the computer, therefore killing the battery. Be careful before just turning off the strip.

Hi - What's the brand name of the powerstrips that turn themselves off when devices they hook to are in standby? I heard flatscreen TV's a major stand-by power hogs, but there's no way I'm crawling behind my TV each time I turn it off. I'm happy to consolidate all my charges and stuff into one place too. Thanks!

Yep, I definitely had a friend who swears that he knocked about a 100 bucks off his power bill by turning off and unplugging his power strips and appliances. Subsequently, his house is very quiet...=)
