Your idea of keeping track of mileage is great. Unfortunately your method relies on the gas gauge. Being an auto mechanic for years I can tell you that gas gauges are not that reliable. When you look at the gauge and it is at the halfway point the tank maybe half empty, or it may not.
The best way to keep track is to use the meter on the gas pump, which has to be more accurate by law. So reset your trip odometer when you fill up, just like you said, then drive. When you need to fill up again, write down the number of miles on your trip odo and divide that by the number of gallons it took to fill your tank.
If you really want to get the most accurate measurement, always fill up at the same pump at the same station when the temperature is the same. The level of the ground at the pump and the amount of vapor in the tank, affected by the temp, make a difference in how many gallons you can put in your tank.
Sort of like trying to eat while sitting at a table vs. eating while laying on your stomach.
