All this green talk makes my head hurt. Our group of friends here in Cincinnati, Ohio recently took a tour of Rumpke's Landfill. Their biggest complaint about plastic bags is that occasionally one will get loose and be taken by the wind like a parachute into a nearby neighbors tree. Other than that, all the trash is compacted so completely that it takes a long time for any of it to compost. Additionally, they are required by law to bulldoze soil over a mature site and plant grass there.
One good thing about plastic bags is that unlike some nasty chemicals and other biodegradables, they are stable and don't leach into the local water supply.
Having said all this, I do recykle my plastic bags. They make wonderful trash can liners for the small cans in our individual rooms and also are good as receptacles when I scoop the cat's litter boxes. I bet you could think of many more good uses for them if you put your head to it. Oh, did I mention they are so much easier to carry than paper bags. Hey, there is an idea; why don't we tax paper bags. Think of all the trees we would save. Yes, that's right, we need more taxes and more "Big Bovernment" interfering in our lives. I think it is terrible how little we pay our governments compared to places like Ireland and the UK.
P.S. Would you like to talk about so-called "Global Warming"? There is a lot of really (good?) science behind that one too.

I sometimes hear statements like "one lonely onion skin can contaminate a whole batch of recycled bags" and wonder, is this really true? When we recycle plastic bottles, I'm sure many people don't rinse them properly and leave a little bit of some random liquid at the bottom (oil, soda, milk, whatever). Recycling seems to handle these bottles fine, as far as I've heard. Can an onion skin really be that much worse?

The reason I ask is if people think they have to be perfect when recycling bags lest they "contaminate" a whole batch, they're likely to skip it and just throw the bags away.

Seattle has just passed a law that will go into effect January 1, 2009, that mandates a 20-cent tax on every bag, paper or plastic, at grocery, drug, and convenience stores. The following article mentions this as well as other laws being considered in LA and the state of California.
